Gilbert Clyde Vandling III, “Gib”, 85, died peacefully on September 10, 2017 after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his mother, Mildred Heiss Vandling, father, Gilbert Clyde Vandling II, sister, Margaret Bingham, brother-in-law, John Bingham.

He is survived by a son, Gilbert Charles (Pam) Vandling; a daughter, Sallie Vandling; long-time companion, Janet Ottman; grandchildren, Christina and Gilbert Alexander Vandling; sister, Lorna (Paul) Boyer.

Gib was born July 19, 1932 and was raised in Mifflinville, Pennsylvania. He served in the U. S. Navy, Airborne Division, as an aircraft radio electrician. He graduated from Illinois Technical Institute and Syracuse University. Gib spent most of his career at IBM, Federal Systems Division. He was the architect and manager for the Space Shuttle Computer program. His life-long hobby was building and flying model airplanes. He is remembered for his hospitality, especially his New Year's Day parties featuring sauerkraut and salad with blue cheese dressing.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday at the Hopler & Eschbach Funeral Home 483 Chenango St. Binghamton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 – 11:00 am.
