Herman "Harry" Zwart, 85, passed away on August 1, 2017 at his home in Johnson City, after a very courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Harry was born on August 27, 1931 to Stanley and Johanna (Kip) Zwart in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the younger of two children.
After graduating from Binghamton High School in 1950, Harry attended and graduated from Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute in Farmingdale, L.I., N.Y. in 1952. Harry enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL. It was there he met his beautiful redhead - Elizabeth, whom he always called Lizzie.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force Harry returned home to start a family with his wife and join his father in the family business, Riverside Gardens, Inc. which was begun by his father Stan Zwart in 1940. Harry owned and operated the business from 1955-1995. After retiring he remained active in the business, helping out whenever called upon.
After the business was sold in 2002 Harry managed the turf farm of the old business for Boland's Excavating and Topsoil, Inc. until the late spring of 2016. Riverside Gardens was his life's work and it prospered under his leadership.
Harry had many dogs during his lifetime, and appreciated each one for their unique personality and companionship.
Harry was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth in 2014 and his parents Stan and Johanna Zwart in 1974 and 2008 respectively. He is survived by his son Richard (Laureen) Zwart, Marietta, PA; daughter Patricia (Mark) LoVuolo, Chenango Forks; daughter Linda, Johnson City; sister Claire deRoos, Johnson City; brother-in-law and sister-in-law James (Patricia) Hart, Bascom, FL; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Harry's family would like to thank Lourdes Hospice, particularly Jakki and Hilary and Angels on Call Jennifer, Kashawna and Jess for the  wonderful care you all gave him, and we will always be thankful for that.
In memory of Harry expressions of sympathy may be made to the B.C. Animal Shelter, 110 Cutler Pond Rd., Binghamton, NY 13905
