Janice A. Thompson died peacefully October 17, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born May  17, 1932 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of the late Lawrence B. and Ellen Church Barnes. She spent her childhood in Lockport, NY and graduated from Lockport Sr. High School and Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing where she worked for eight years before moving to Broome County, where she did private duty nursing for several years. Predeceased by her loving husband of 42 years, Robert, in 1997, Janice is survived by two sons: Jeffrey J. (Lisa) of Morganton, NC and their children and  and granddaughter, Taylor Ward (Peyton) and Parker and Nicholas A. Thompson; James L. of Kalihiwai Kauai, Hawaii, one daughter: Sharon E. Gerdus and her son Robert E. Gerdus. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law: Barbara and Dr. Donald Hauler of Huntsville, AL, and several nieces, nephews and many good friends.
  Janice volunteered her time as treasurer of the Chenango Valley Nursery School for several years, was active with the Chenango Bridge PTA, served as grade mother for her three children, was active with their scout troops and was a band parent.
  A faithful longtime member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Janice served on the Altar Guild and volunteered as the church treasurer, both for twenty years. She also served on the Vestry and the Visiting Committee and was the coordinator of the CHOW pantry.
  A memorial service will be held at 11 am Friday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 728 River Rd. Chenango Bridge. Private entombment will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Janice requested donations to her church in her memory. Please sign her online guestbook at www.HEFUNERALHOME.com.
