John E. Houghtaling, Sr., 77, of Lisle, died October 22, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was a salesman for Olum's retiring after 36 years of service and served in the U.S. Air Force. John loved all of nature and enjoyed spending time at the beach. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer and was an expert at identifying bird calls. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and love for his family. He was a member of the Nanticoke United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving family; his wife of 57 years, Joyce, his children Edwin and Beth of Binghamton, John, Jr. and Valerie of Afton, Mary Lou and Patrick Madden of Kirkwood, 5 grandchildren; Kristi (Patrick) Monaghan, Samantha (Andy) Griffith, Brieann and Colin Benkert and Kenny Main, two sisters; Shirley Arthur of Binghamton, Harriet Brougham of FL, his mother-in-law, Christina Wandell of Binghamton and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Edwin and Harriet (Bonker) Houghtaling. The family offers their special thanks to Rhonda from Hospice for her loving care. Memorial services will be 11 am Saturday at the Nanticoke United Methodist Church, 25 Church St. Nanticoke. The family will greet friends at the church from 10 am -11 am. Private burial will be in Vestal Hills. The family requests in lieu of flowers that friends make memorial contributions to Nanticoke Methodist Church, PO Box 4 Maine, NY 13802, Lourdes Hospice 4102 Old Vestal Road, Vestal, NY 13850 or St. Jude's Hospital (st.jude.org)
