Smith, Halla Bjorg

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, loving wife, and friend, Halla Björg Smith (Valdimarsdóttir), went home to Our Loving Savior, Oct 22, 2017 at the age of 79, due to Alzheimer's disease, while being cared for at the home of Edward and Hilda (daughter) Williams, Montrose, PA. Mom fought a courageous battle for several years.

Halla was born March 8, 1938, in the small village of Blöndos in northern Iceland, to Valdimar and Anna María (Sigurbjörnsdóttir) Petersson.

Halla was preceded in death by her parents, and her son Russell. Halla is survived by her husband Ronald; children Larry (Joanne), Ron (Lynn), Hilda (Edward), Tammy (Bill), Heidi; as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Halla fell in love and married Ronald Smith while he served in the US Air Force while stationed in Iceland. They then moved to Binghamton, NY and raised six children, before moving to Myrtle Beach, SC, after retiring. They were married over 59 years.

Halla first worked for the Broome County Infirmary and then worked over 30 years at the Binghamton Psychiatric Center as a mental health therapy aide/nurse. She was very kind and loving with all of her patients. Mom always ran late for work, church and other events, (+ or - 15 minutes) and it was a standing joke she would be late for her own funeral.

Mom loved family gatherings and could turn any situation into an adventure. She was a very patient and loving grandmother and great grandmother to her many grandchildren, always making them laugh. She spent time with each one as if they were her only grandchild. She loved the outdoors, fishing, golfing, skiing, walking the beach, and exploring America's beautiful scenery. Mom was the glue that held our family together through difficult times. She was an incredible Christian woman who became such a prayer warrior over her whole family. Her faith in the Lord Jesus was an inspiration to all who knew her or met her on a chance encounter.

A special thank you to Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their loving assistance to mom in her last days. Mom requested no showing or funeral be held for her. A small celebration/remembrance with family will be held.

In Lieu of flowers and gifts please send a donation to the Alzheimer's Association  (ALZ.ORG) in Halla Smith's name. Thank you
