I have not lived in the tri-cities for years and did not know Butch personally, but always loved to dance. Would always look forward to dances where butch and the second edition played. I think central dances were the first but saw them at many other places, Ramada, number 5, etc. My favorite song was "Dear Prudence", rest in peace and sing to the heavens.

I have just learned, with sad shock, of Butch's passing. What a great guy, and fabulous vocalist he was. I first got to know him back in the "Rickett's" era. Once you met Butch, and once you heard him, you were a fan for life. It's been five years since last talking with him, and in the fifty or so years of knowing him, he was always the same. What you saw is what you got.His was a musical road well traveled, and a job well done. My condolences to all his family. I will miss him.

As i read through this guest book my eyes fill with tears and my heart is filled with sorrow.  I remember the days back in Noth High when on Fridays, before football games, Butch and the rest of the football players would all gather for lunch and during those lunches we'd be blessed with Butch singing The "Our Father."  Sure Butch was a great musician and, as many others. i frequented the local establishments for years and years just to hear him sing with the Second Edition......so many nights of fun, friendships and fond memories - the greatest of times for the "Greatest Generation."
However, Butch's greatest contribution to society was who he was and what he represented.  To know Butch as a friend was a blessing and a privilege...a kind, gentle, and yes, kinda shy person, he was so, so special.  I am so happy that i got to see and talk to him just prior to his passing.  Butch was not only a local legend, but the epitome of good to everyone who knew or heard of him, but more so for those who grew up knowing him well.  Butch, my thoughts and payers are with you...God Bless You and Your Loved Ones.....I will never forget you......Rest in Peace, My Friend.

To all family members and Friends of Butch, i express my deepest sympathy for your loss.  I first met Butch through my Ithaca High school years (1959-62), while I was the Drummer for Bernie Milton and the cavaliers.  He & his band the Ricketts (sorry if I spelled that wrong) would come to our student Union Building and perform.  He became an immediate friend.  He had a Great Smile and  really sincerely cared about whatever we would talk about.  He was a "smart Man" and a great talent.  After High school, I entered the Navy and never saw him again, but I can remember him like it was just yesterday that I saw him.  I'll pray for him forever.  Jack Shelton

R.I.P., our dear friend, Butch Skeene, and thank you for sharing your beautiful voice, your smile, your warm friendship and the unforgettable memories of times at the Beacon Inn, the Tradewinds (so long ago!) and elsewhere, teaching you the words to "Summer Place" your excitement when your son Danny was born and so much more.  The world has truly lost one of its very special people but you shall never be forgotten. Hi my dear old friend.  I was very sad in my heart to hear of your passing.
So sorry to think of you suffering for a long while.  I visited Binghamton last year but I could not find anyone who I used to know and was friends with.  You were always a great light in my path. From when we were very
young children and when we grew older. So many years have passed,
if only I had known you were sick, I would have contacted you and tried to comfort you. Your spirit and lovely soul will be missed here on earth. But my  dear Butch, now you can rest peacefully with Our Lord Jesus Christ. Keep a place there for me,  someday I will see you again.  God Bless you forever, and God Bless your child and family and friends. Your memory will always have a place in my mind.  Love to you,  Bye Butch for now.

I am fortunate and blessed to have known and performed with Butch. I loved his voice, his singing gestures and his personality. Butch sang "Somewhere(There's a place for us)" at our wedding. I still can remember his singing that song to this day. I used to enjoy seeing him at Copperfields with Four O'Clock Collection. My favorite songs were "Lovely Day”, “If”, “Aubrey” and of course Wichita Lineman. Whenever I visited the area I always made it a point to see Butch with the Second Edition. The last time I was standing next to Rhonda Plunkett watching Butch sing “Wichita Lineman. It was beautiful. Rhonda leaned over and said to me “Only Butch could do that”.  Thank you Butch for sharing your voice and personality with us. We will miss you. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Spent many a night at some of the most popular watering holes listening to Butch and his band. When I and my old friends talk about the old days and the fun we used to have, Butch Skeene and the Second Addition is often a part of the conversation.   When I heard his band got back together a few years back, I couldn't wait to find out when and where I could hear them again! Found out they were playing locally here on New Years Eve, and made it a point to be the first in line for tickets!  One of the best New Year's Eve's I ever had listening to the band I grew up listening to.       Farwell Butch. You've left us but your music and the memories will stay with us forever!

I dealt with Butch's POA and told her I knew Butch in younger years many years ago. She told me his friends & band members were planning a tribute for him sometime in the Spring & said you're so welcome to come. I will. What everybody said in their tributes to Butch;  He was so respected for his talent & yet for his down to earth kind, giving, sharing his sense of humor & camaraderie with everybody in his midst. That's special. That's a special human being. What's really special is that all those people "got it " from him. That is the ultimate of charisma !

Our condolences to the family, friends and band members.  Butch was an angel on earth and now continues his "gig" in heaven, he was simply the BEST - as a singer/ musician and person.  What a blessing for us to have had him all these years.  I called him a year in advance to book him for my parents (Dominick & Angie Mandicott's) 50th wedding anniversary in 1987.  What a show he put on, he let my Dad & I sing together on stage with him.  I am so happy I have this on tape, I will listen to him as I watch this celebration, as I celebrate his life.  My husband was a promoter & agent for bands & he told me he never knew any musician who was like Butch.  We read the entire listing of the guest book.  Butch was given his gift to promote music, the goodness in people and be a great role model - Nobody did it better!!!!!!!!! Butch, we know you will continue to entertain in heaven & my parents will be dancing to your beautiful voice.

Butch sang at Gentlemen Joe's and the Arlington Hotel and many other places in the early sixties. I would see him with Dean Wilson and Charlie Eaton and Larry Cornwall and JB at Audio Service on Water.  They practice on State Street. He often sang at Copperfields on Wed in the 70's and 80's. He later worked at Philly's on Clinton Street. What a voice and what a  a great entertainer.

Butch was not just a superlative singer and entertainer. He had the wonderful gift of connecting to people. Sometimes it was a pat on the back or a handshake or maybe eye contact. Anyone who ever heard him sing knows that he connected with his powerful, expressive voice. He somehow made people think they knew him and that he was including them in his performance. We may never experience someone with all those qualities here again.

We worked and played together for years.   I remember working with

picking you up on Clinton street.   I remember one time we missed
each other in the morning and you took a taxi all the way to Syracuse.
You were that type of responsible person, you had a job and you were
going to get there what ever it took.   I remember the times you came to our house for meals and fellowship.   Always loved to hear you sing.
My favorite was "My Bellame".    I belive I still have a blue bussiness card

First and foremost.. my sympathies to Butch's Son, close "family" and friends..
It must be an unfathomable loss to those close to him. It hurts me just to know
he is gone. And I only knew him from his music and a few chats over the years.

I reviewed all the Guest book entries. Some of you had some very inspired notes.
Thank you for that. I was so impressed, I had thought of making snippets of
them to include here.. but there is WAY too many.. and every one different and every one true. I encourage every one to read them.. you will find some real gems in there.

So i will say only these few words. I have known him for 50 years. From the bars
in Endicott and Bingo. Always loved to go hear him.  when you get to my age,
it takes a lot to get one out of the house.. but when i saw Butch was performing
it was a signal to go. I did not always make it.. but yes, the last time i saw him
was at Number 5. a few years back. as usual he was so surrounded by people
the best I could get out of him was a wave as i walked by. yes, he NEVER forgot a face..

Being that i am from the Elmira area.. I want to relay this. For those who Know
about Ernie Davis.. Butch was in the same class as a person: Great Talent. Great
person.  and yes, should be on the Binghamton Walk of Fame or Musical Hall of
Fame if there is one. NO DOUBT.

i hope that somehow, some CDs of his music can be made and available at the
testimonial for him in the future. I have nothing. And if I am still in Florida, I hope
someone who knows me will by TWO.. so i can get one later..

Butch.. i am very sad.  Danny if you ever need anything.. Count on me too.

Butch was such an inspiration to teenagers growing up in Binghamton in the late 1960's. The Second Edition was my favorite band and there were many live bands locally that had talent. But, I remember when Butch sang, I always felt like dancing and would lose all those awkward teenage inhibitions of shyness. Asking a girl to dance always seemed easier when Butch was up on stage, especially singing  "Twenty - Five Miles" by Edwin Starr, my favorite cover of his. So, thank you Butch, for all the wonderful memories you helped create. God Bless and may you Rest In Peace.

Butch's contribution to the musical scene in the Binghamton area and the planet as a whole is very significant. Coming up as a young musician in the late 1980s Butch would appear on gigs I was playing as well as sitting in everywhere from the Music Box to the Rad Man Saloon. Anytime he was present I knew that it was going to be a great experience.  His level of professionalism and support helped me grow at a young age as he was the first real singer I had the honor of accompanying. So much musicality, so much soul, so much humility and love.  He taught me a lot just in how he lived. My sincere condolences to his family. The way he lived carries on in the many musicians who were honored to share the bandstand with him.

“Don’t Go Changing” by Billy Joel.

Don't go changing to try and please me
You never let me down before, mmm
And don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you any more

I said I love you and that's forever

For many of us hearing Butch at our first Teenage dance was a defining  moment. Dancing with that special girl and for many finding the love of their life was part of Butch's legacy. Having him play a special request that your dance partner wanted to hear made an ordinary school dance feel like a special occasion. Thank you Butch for all the hearts you joined together because you were also a part of that special evening, and for some a lifetime of love & happiness.

Our first memory of Butch was on the stage at North High in the late 50s.  The voice was there from the beginning.  He could play a good game of basketball, too.
He sang on a wintry day in 1963 at our wedding reception. He was there in spirit with The Second Edition, a month ago, when we celebrated fifty.  About three years ago, we sat at a table at Number 5 and talked about life, then and now. He lived the changes and shared a lot of wisdom.  Rest in peace, dear friend.

Butch may be the very best voice to ever come out of this area. His band - The Second Edition - played at our high school dances and I was able to hear what really fine musicians sounded like in person. Later, Butch and I became friends when we played together in the band Brotherhood. I enjoyed performing with Butch and getting to know someone I looked up to as a teen. He had a gentle soul and demeanor and was truly modest about his genuine talent.

He and my dear friend Santo Cofini made my place a real success. Butch was a huge talent and a warm and beautiful human being. As a young upstart singer in 1964, I looked up to Butch as a professional singer of unmatched talent and grace.
Butch was also a member of one of the versions of The Platters, for a short time.
I will personally always remember how good he made me feel about my own singing and how he encouraged me every time I had the honor of speaking with him.
My heart goes out to his family, the band members, past & present and his many many friends.
Truly a great man with a great talent. He will be sorely missed, but surely remembered by ALL of us. Rest in peace Butch.

Rosemary, Larry, Charlie, and Ferris,

We have lost one of the most gentle, kind, witty, talented and beautiful friends one could ever have.

My heart is with you all.  And Gail (Lasky) Yannuzzi sends her prayers for you as well.

Rest in Peace to one of the greatest voices of the Southern Tier. Butch could sing it all. I remember him singing "Misty" at the Zanzibar and the crowd went absolutely crazy. I believe they thought him to be all Rock and R&B. They were wrong. From the Bible: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted"... God Bless you Butch.
