Betty Jean (Bjerke) Hildebrant, 96, of Vestal, NY, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025. Born on March 13, 1928, she was predeceased by her husband, Richard V. Hildebrant in 2001, parents Andrew and Amelia (‘Minnie’ Daley) Bjerke, and sisters Helen Biggs and Ruth Feller.
Betty grew up on a farm between Andover and Conde, South Dakota. She received teacher training and taught several grades in a one-room schoolhouse, before marrying her high school sweetheart, Richard Hildebrant, after his return from service in World War II. Richard, schooled in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University, took a job with General Electric in Schenectady, NY, and was soon promoted and transferred to GE’s Johnson City, NY, plant. Betty and he settled into a busy and full family life in nearby Vestal, NY. Their marriage of nearly 55 years was a testament to love, partnership, and faith.
A dedicated stay-at-home mom, Betty poured her heart and energy into nurturing her family and community. She was an unfailing cheerleader for her children's activities and could often be seen in the stands or theater seats enjoying their performances. Betty was a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, an altar cleaner and pantry volunteer at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, and an election official. Betty served as a volunteer lunch lady, ensuring children in her community had what they needed, and was a "second mom" to many of her children's friends, as well as a beloved member of her neighborhood bridge club. A lover of babies, her gentle spirit and unwavering kindness left a lasting memory for everyone who knew her. Betty’s love of travel and adventurous spirit led to many wonderful trips with Richard, and she looked forward to each with great curiosity and enthusiasm.
Survivors include her 10 children: Richard Hildebrant of Boston, MA; Steven Hildebrant (Harriet) of Greer, SC; Virginia Kim of Staten Island, NY; Jeffrey Hildebrant (Elba) of Gaithersburg, MD; Timothy Hildebrant of Endicott, NY; Catherine Smith (Cal) of Punta Gorda, FL; Barbara Sherwood (Ken) of Macungie, PA; Teresa Walter (David) of Rochester, MN; Helen Pierce (James) of Atlanta, GA; and Phyllis LoVetere (Jay) of Asheville, NC. Betty's legacy of love and devotion extends to her 22 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy.
Betty's life was a beautiful example of love, service, and dedication to faith and family. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. The family would like to thank the staff at Good Shepherd Fairview Home for their compassionate care for our mother. In her memory, please consider contributing to Shriners Hospital for Children, in lieu of flowers.
