Bishop Carl Eugene Lewis, 73, of Johnson City, transitioned on August 5th, 2024. Bishop was born on September 10th,1950 to parents Ernest and Martha, in Cambridge, Maryland. He was the eldest son of eleven siblings. He enlisted in the Navy in 1972 as a Dental assistant as well as a medical corpsman and was honorably discharged from the US navy in 1974. In February of 1974 he met the love of his life and life time partner, Thelma D. Lewis. Bishop was baptized in Jesus’ name on March 13th, 1977, at his first visit to Holy Temple Church #2 in Syracuse, NY which was pastored by the late Suff. Bishop Alvin J. Nelson. He was filled with the holy ghost the morning of April 3, 1977, and then married his beloved wife that same evening. From their marriage, they were blessed with a son, Anthony, and a daughter, Patricia.
Bishop was called into the ministry six months after he was filled with the holy ghost. He worked diligently and severed the late Suff. Bishop Nelson faithfully. He was licensed to preach in 1978, and was ordained in the New York State Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc. in June of 1987. In 1987, Bishop Lewis was called by the Lord to start work in Binghamton, NY. He started with Bible Study classes in the home of the late Deacon and sister Chetham. On Christmas day of 1988 the Lord called him and his wife to 103 Susquehanna Street which was the birthplace of Salvation Temple Church. Their first service was held on February 5,1989 where seven souls were baptized in Jesus’ name. On March 6, 1995 Bishop and 1st Lady Lewis started another church; Salvation Temple Church located in Scranton, PA. After six years of ministry Bishop turned the church over to Suff. Bishop Ray Johnson. In 1996 Bishop received his Doctor of Divinity from International Apostolic College of Grace and Truth in Dayton, Ohio. He also holds a master’s degree in Christian education, and a bachelors degree of Science.
He served in various offices in ministry under the late Suff. Bishop Nelson’s leadership. He was elevated to District Elder while serving in the Pennsylvania State Council in 1997. He then was elevated to the office of Suff. Bishop by the NYS Council in 1998 and Suff. Bishop of Canada in 2003. He was elevated to the office of Bishop in 2007 while serving in the Northeast Canada Council. He served as Bishop over Canada until 2009 when he was transferred to preside over the NYS Council of the P.A.W. He then retired after 10 years of service as the Diocesan Bishop of the NYS Council of PAofW, Inc.
Bishop Carl E. Lewis was predeceased by his father, Ernest, his mother, Martha, and his stepfather, Melvin. His siblings; Melvin, Lisa and Calvin Cephas. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dr. Thelma D. Lewis; his children, Anthony Vanderhorst (Angela), former daughter in-law Carrie, his daughter Patricia Vasquez (William); his grandchildren Lena, Amber, Anthony II, and Angelo Vanderhorst, Isiah and Julio Perry, and William Jr and Reign Vasquez; great grandchildren, Noah Brown, King Elijah and Lorenzo Michie; a host of Godchildren; his siblings, Jacquelyn Cephas Abram (Lewis), Evelyn Rideout (Leory), Lance Cephas (Janet), Garry Cephas, Dwight Cephas, Monica Cephas, and Bevelyn Cephas-Quidas (Micheal). A host of aunts, nieces, nephews and STC church family and friends.
A viewing for Bishop Lewis will be from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm Sunday August 11 at the Salvation Temple Church, 80 Main St. Binghamton. His home-going funeral service will begin at 5:00 pm. Burial with military honors will be 9:30 am Monday in Vestal Hills Memorial Park, 3997 Vestal Road, Vestal, New York.
