Dr. Carrie Ruth Rosefsky Wickham, of Atlanta, GA, peacefully departed our physical world on February 5th, 2026. A brilliant academic with a loving and gentle spirit, she leaves an indelible impression on those who carry her with them.
Her story started in Binghamton, New York, where Carrie’s love of learning was nurtured early in life. She holds a B.A. in Social Studies from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. She taught Middle Eastern Studies at Emory University, specializing in political islam and social movements, and developed a keen interest in social justice and women’s rights. Throughout her career, Carrie conducted groundbreaking research with government officials, scholars, and thought leaders across the Arab world, contributing to and enhancing a robust global conversation.
Her professional accomplishments include writing and publishing two books, a research fellowship at the Library of Congress, lecturing at the State Department and the CIA, a feature on CNN, and the Emory Williams Award for Distinguished Teaching, the highest honor presented to faculty members.
Carrie also led a rich inner life filled with beauty, art, music, and love. She was a pianist and a songwriter, a voracious reader, and deeply spiritual and philosophical, following the teachings of Judaism and Sufism as well as stoicism and humanism. She loved to laugh and found serenity by the ocean. She was, above all else, profoundly kind, nonjudgmental, and accepting.
Despite proudly identifying as an introvert, Carrie was beloved by a wide circle of friends and family. She shared extremely close bonds with her two daughters Anna and Iris, encouraging them to always be true to themselves and follow their hearts. She and her life partner Walter cultivated an epic romance over twelve years and she saw his family as her own. She is survived by her three younger siblings, parents, sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, colleagues, students, and her friends, all of whom will miss her and the light she brought to their lives.
Lastly, she and her family would like to thank Dr. Jane Meisel for her role in Carrie’s breast cancer journey, providing immeasurable dignity and quality care over a hard-fought five and a half years.
Carrie approached the world with thoughtfulness and curiosity, and will watch over us until we meet her in the next realm.
Her service will be held 1:00pm Tuesday, February 10th at Temple Israel, 4737 Deerfield Pl, Vestal, NY 13850. Streaming capabilities will be provided to those who are unable to physically attend. She will be laid to rest at West Lawn Cemetery, Johnson City. Arrangements provided by Hopler & Eschbach Funeral Home.
