Binghamton: Charles "Basil" Punako, 93, passed away September 21, 2024 from a sudden illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his children Diane Hover of Binghamton, Thomas Punako of Bakersfield, CA. Sonya (Ken) Hildebrandt of Vestal and Nancy Mastry of Vinton, VA; 3 grandchildren Elliott (Tiffany) Hover, Mallory Hover and Gwendolyn (Eric) Sarnicola; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Dorothy and his son-in-law Nick Mastry. Charles was a long time dedicated parishioner of the Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church where he volunteered in many capacities over the years. He retired from CAE-Link and also the U.S. Army after 40 years of service to his country.
A viewing will be held from 10:00-11:00 am Friday at the Hopler & Eschbach Funeral Home, 483 Chenango St. Binghamton, followed by a burial service at Holy Spirit Cemetery at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you make a donation to Mercy House in his name.
