Dorothy “Dottie” Ann Boyer Payne
With heavy hearts the family of Dorothy Ann Boyer Payne share her passing on June 20, 2021 at the age of 85. Dottie was born in York, PA where she grew up with her beloved brother William Boyer (deceased) and Cousin Paul David Billet. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Hygiene, met her former spouse David Payne, and graduated in 1957.
She moved to Binghamton in 1964, worked as an oral surgeon assistant, and began her family of three children (Jennifer, Katherine, and Luke). In addition to being an incredibly attentive, creative and supportive mother, Dottie divided her time between the Junior League, Tri-Cities Opera, Girl Scouts, and later P.A.S.T. (Preservation Association of the Southern Tier). She was always coordinating some kind of event and had an amazing knack for organizing merchandise whether it be for the Junior League Bargain Bazaar, the TCO Op Shop, or a 34 Vermont Avenue garage sale.
Any kind of gathering, whether it was birthday parties for the kids, dinners for the swim team, tea parties for the Girl Scouts, cocktail parties for the Tri-Cities Opera Guild or hosting elaborate dinners with her Gourmet Group, she always made it seem effortless.
Dottie’s Desserts was a small side business that highlighted her talents in the kitchen. There were no store-bought cookies in the Payne household. Ironically as a Dental Hygienist in Rick Lacey’s practice she would give out toothbrushes to trick or treaters. Dottie was also a long-term employee of the Antique Exchange and held the title of Chief Decorator. She could fit more things into a corner while creating an eye-catching display better than anyone.
The loss of her son Luke to cancer in 1998 was heart breaking but she poured her love into grandsons Clemens Pompi and Quin Pompi (sons of Katherine and Mark Pompi) and Luke Belt (son of Jennifer Payne and Woody Belt) who knew her as Mamasan along with her nieces and nephews’ children who knew her as Aunt Dot.
Dottie did love flowers and her garden but requested that donations be made to P.A.S.T. (Preservation Association of the Southern Tier), Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways, or Christ the King Lutheran Church. Please join her family for a memorial service on Friday, July 9 at 3:00pm at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Vestal, NY.
