"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."
With hearts full of submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of our beloved Dr. Shamsuddin Rana, MD, on March 4, 2025.
Born on Jan. 6, 1937, Shams-ud-din was a compassionate, charitable, and gentle soul, who embodied altruism, having devoted his days with service and dedication to faith and community. His efforts in this life brought blessings to others.
Professionally, Shams-ud-din was a Medical Doctor and specialist in Pulmonary Medicine. He completed his Pre-Medical Education at Government College Multan in Punjab, Pakistan and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Islamia College in Lahore. He went on to complete his medical training at Nishtar Medical College, graduating in 1964. Between 1967 and 1976 he completed eight fellowships in Allergy and Immunology and Pulmonary Medicine. He was well known at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Binghamton General Hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, A.O. Fox Hospital, and Guthrie Clinic/Robert Packer Hospital.
He was a respected pulmonologist at Lourdes for the past 40 years. During Shamsuddin's 58-year career, he provided medical care to tens of thousands of patients, touching countless lives with his expertise and compassion.
Beyond his professional career, Shams-ud-din was a firm believer in education and the advancement of society through learning and community. In his hometown of Chak 20, Shorkot, Pakistan, Shams-ud-din shared his resources to establish a school to educate boys (K-5) and girls (K-10). His commitments to his village's learning echoes the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH), who stated: "Whoever follows a path to seek knowledge therein, God will make easy for him a path to paradise." (Sahih Muslim 2699)
