Sheila G. (Gerig) Smith

Sheila Gerig Smith, 87, went home to be with the Lord on November 22, 2024. The daughter of Solomon and Irene Gerig, Sheila was born in Bainbridge, NY in 1937.

She graduated from Sidney High School in 1955, and from the SUNY College of Education at Albany in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Sheila was a kind-hearted, nurturing maternal figure to her family as a stay-at-home mom.  In her early years, she was an English teacher and then later in life worked for the Broome County Office for the Aging for 8 years.  Sheila enjoyed everyone she met and will be greatly missed.  The family would like to recognize the many home health caregivers and Sheila’s niece, Sheila Snyder, who provided loving support to keep her at home and give her the best possible end of life.

 Sheila was predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Stark W. Smith, on November 14. She is survived by her four daughters: Sue Fehrer and her husband Jim, Stephanie “Tassie” Freije and her husband Mark, Laurie Hubik and her husband Daniel, and Kari Randall and her husband Norm, as well as 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
