Stephen K. Cornwell, 68 of Binghamton, NY and Fort Lauderdale, FL passed away June 28, 2015 at UHS, Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, NY.   Stephen spent his work life in Traffic Management and worked for Fowlers Department Store, IBM Corporation and Endicott Coil before his disabilities forced him to retire.

Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Stephen could bring a smile to anyone he encountered.  With a sparkle in his eye and that contagious grin, he could capture your heart and develop a friendship before you knew it.  In addition to his charm, Stephen will be remembered by most as a person with a green thumb who could make any plant flourish as well as his passion for animals, many who have come to depend on him for their daily meals.

Stephen is survived by his Partner and Spouse of 41 years, Wayne C. Mitteer, two children, Melissa Cornwell-Devine of Binghamton, and Stephen K (Michelle) Cornwell of Endicott.  Four grandchildren who were the pride of his life, Chelsea and Lilly Devine, Stephen III and Stephanie Cornwell.  He is also survived by a special nephew Robert Carpenter and several other nieces and nephews.  Finally he is survived by his dear friends, Eric Skau, Scott Johnson and Donald Smith.

The family wishes to thank the phenomenal staff of the CCU at Wilson Memorial Hospital along with Dr.  Michael Vitellas who worked tirelessly the past 2 weeks to return Stephen to health.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday July 1st from 4-7pm At the Hopler &Eschbach Funeral Home, 483 Chenango St, Binghamton NY. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Vincent DePaul Blessed Sacrament Church, 465 Clubhouse Rd. Vestal, NY on Thursday July 2nd at 10am.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

As an option to flowers, please consider a donation in Stephens name to a local animal shelter or a charity of your choice.

The Wind Beneath My Wings

It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face
You were content to let me shine, that's your way
You always walked a step behind

So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength
A beautiful face without a name for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain

Did you ever know that you're my hero
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath my wings

Fly, fly, so high against the sky
So high I almost touch the sky
Thank you, thank you
Thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.
