Theodore Schmits Obituary

Theodore R. Schmits, 56, of Port Dickinson, passed away at his home on January 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Ted is survived by his wife, Diane Schmits; their children, Emily Schmits and Christofer Schmits; his parents, Walter and Katherine Schmits; his siblings, Gretchen (Thierry) Raymond, Lisa (Matt) Chase, and Timothy Schmits; his mother-in-law, Helen Gardella; his sister-in-law, Karen (Paul) Knapp; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, including his Sandy Pond family, and his Pi Alpha Nu fraternity brothers and sisters. Ted will also be missed by his beloved dogs, Lucy, Finley, and Rosie, who brought him constant companionship and comfort. He was also preceded in death by his cherished dogs, Toby, Maddie, and Duke, who are lovingly remembered and are certainly waiting to welcome him home.

Ted was a devoted and loving husband and father who did everything for his family. He found joy in caring for them in everyday ways—cooking meals, fixing things around the house, and always making sure they were taken care of. He was known for his warm smile and quick sense of humor. He especially loved spending time with family on cruises, so much so that he would joke, “We have no cruise control.” Ted loved being on the water at Sandy Pond as well, whether boating or enjoying the beach, and will be greatly missed by his Sandy Pond family.

Ted was a graduate of Chenango Valley High School, Class of 1987, and SUNY New Paltz. He owned and operated his own computer sales company, Economical Business Solutions, and also worked as a salesman for Eastern Copy Products.  He counted many lifelong friends among his classmates and professional colleagues.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1049 Chenango Street, Binghamton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Guthrie Lourdes Hospice
