Catherine (Lauko) Kunz

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Catherine M. Kunz, 57, on April 14th as a result of a yearlong illness.  She was predeceased by her father, Robert Lauko, by her brothers Christopher and Gerald Lauko.  Cathy is survived by her loving and supportive husband of 35 years, Robert Kunz; by her beloved sons Christopher Kunz, Esq. and daughter-in-law Kelly and first grandchild, Tommy. Cathy is also survived by her son Dr. Kevin Kunz, MD and by her mother Helen Lauko of Vestal to whom she was very close and supportive.   

Cathy graduated from Johnson City High School, Broome Community College, and Binghamton University where she excelled academically with honors and obtained both her Bachelor’s Degree as well as her Master’s Degree in Social Work. Cathy most recently worked as the statewide Social Work Supervisor for the NYS Workers’ Compensation Board. She previously worked as a LMSW for the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. Cathy took pride and satisfaction in helping individuals in need from vulnerable populations. 

 Without question, Cathy considered her happiest and most important role as a devoted mother in raising her two loving sons, Christopher and Kevin. Cathy was a stay-at-home mother for 10 years before re-entering the workforce and she loved spending time with her boys, teaching, mentoring, cheering for them in their athletic activities, and supporting her sons in every way possible. Her sons were her absolute pride and joy and she loved them beyond words and was so proud of the outstanding young men they have become. Cathy loved spending time with her family and grandson, exercising, reading, spending time at any beach, and creating special memories with family and friends.  

She was taken from us far too soon and she will be missed beyond measure by all those who loved her so much.  Cathy was the heart and soul of our family and we are shattered by this indescribable loss. The family would like to thank the incredible staff at Broome Oncology and Lourdes Diagnostic Imaging. 

 A memorial Funeral Mass will be held 12:00 noon  Saturday, April 20th at St. Vincent de Paul Blessed Sacrament Church, 465 Clubhouse Road Vestal, NY.  The visitation will be from 11:00 am until the time of the Mass.  For those wishing to make a donation in Cathy’s memory, please consider CHOW/Broome County Council of Churches, 3 Otseningo St. Binghamton NY 13903.
