Anna Perham Obituary

Anna (Anne) Perham passed away on Saturday January 16, 2021, 48 days short of her 100th birthday, after a brief illness. She was born on March 5, 1921, in Binghamton’s First Ward, the daughter of Didas Joseph and Stefania Krska.  A gymnast as a young adult, Anna (“Kris”) participated in the Slovak Gymnastic Union Sokol Organization; which guided its members throughout life from early youth through maturity in physical health and continuous self-improvement, ultimately contributing to her longevity. Her pride in her Slovak heritage ran deep. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson School Class of 1936 and Binghamton Central Class of 1939. Throughout her life she remained active in both alumni organizations, working on many of their class reunions. When her aspiration of attending college did not materialize, she worked at the Carmel Corn Shop in Binghamton; to the end of her life still telling her stories about selling popcorn, pralines and stirring the fudge in the store-front window. As a young adult in the 1940’s during the big band era, she loved to attend the dances at the Johnson City Pavilion. In her latter years, you could find her at the Binghamton ethnic festivals enjoying dancing the polka. As she got older and her legs could no longer dance, you could still find her tapping her feet to the music. She had a 30 year career working at the General Aniline & Film Company which spanned the ANSCO camera, personal and photographic film and physical testing departments. She was a life-long member of the John Hus Presbyterian Church, and a member and officer of its’ Women’s Association and Beacon Club.  She was one of the original “holy rollers”; the group of women church members who made the buchty for their annual holiday festival. Her church meant everything to her. She was a member and officer of the Chenango Shores Garden Club, Woodrow Wilson Alumni Association and Sokol Ladies Lodge 15W (life-long member). During her retirement, she was able to travel to many places around the world; France, Austria, Italy, Portugal, England, Switzerland, Spain but the highlight was meeting her extended family in the Czech and Slovak Republics. Extensively travelling through the United States her favorites were cruising down the Mississippi on the Delta Queen and small ship cruising through the Alaskan glaciers.  Summer Sundays were spend playing pinochle at the Stonehenge Recreation Association in Greene, NY with friends. Anna was predeceased by her parents, her husbands Thomas Bublinec and Justin Perham, brother William (Audrey) Krska, brothers-in-law Stephen Bublinec and Milton Bublinec, sister-in-law Mary (LeRoy) Benoay, nephew Thomas Benoay and father-in-law and mother-in-law Ignac and Rose Bublinec. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Sally Bublinec and Paul Tomik, her sister-in-law Reta Bublinec, cousin Mildred Luciani, nieces Diana Krska and Rosemary Benoay and nephew William (Kathryn) Benoay, along with her dearest personal friend Josephine (“Zabby”) Tomik. Anna was able to live in her own home to the end, working vigilantly in staying healthy and always rebounding from her falls and breaks.  Her pride in her own independence undoubtedly contributed to her longevity, although at the end her daughter became her caregiver, allowing them to spend many enjoyable years together and playing many games of Scrabble. She was a wonderful mother and will be deeply missed.  Her feisty disposition and zest for life was contagious. God kept her on this earth for over 99 years in which his grace, love and light shined brightly through her. The family would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Rosato and staff for Anna’s care through the years. A special thank you to her friends and neighbors; especially Janice Kienzler and Katie Zindle for their unending love and support. Although our “Anička” is physically gone, she will live in our hearts forever. NAZDAR. A Celebration of Anna’s life will be held at a future date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the John Hus Presbyterian Church, 47 Glenwood Avenue, Binghamton, NY 13905 in her memory. The family was assisted by the Hopler & Eschbach Funeral Home.
