Robert A. Lauko, 88, of Vestal, NY passed away peacefully at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse surrounded by his family on December 4, 2018 after a brief illness following surgery. Bob struggled for many years with Myasthenia Gravis and other health issues. Bob was married for 62 years to his loving wife, Helen. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher, sister Genevieve, parents Robert and Mary Lauko, Helen’s parents Arthur and Marion Bale, and brothers-in-law William Bale who died in the WWII Battle of the Bulge, Jack Bale and Bud Bale. Bob is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter Catherine (Robert) Kunz, son William (Doreen) Lauko, son Gerald; grandchildren Christopher and Kevin Kunz, Kara and Billy Lauko, and Lauren (Dan) Briggs; sister Mary (Carlo) Allerot, brothers Joe (Anne), Steve, John Lauko; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was a veteran of the US Army, past Little League coach, past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus #2953, past Commander of American Legion Post 1700 and served in the American Legion Honor Guard. He attended BCC and volunteered with his friends for the Korean War draft. Bob was proud to be a mail carrier for the USPS for 32 years. He enjoyed telling the story of how he helped catch a bank robber while delivering mail one day in downtown Binghamton. Bob also worked for Brinks Armored Services for 12 years. Bob was an avid reader, was very proud of his Slovak heritage, and was a devout Roman Catholic who prayed the Rosary every day. He loved his family and was very proud of his grandchildren. In retirement, Bob and Helen had enjoyed traveling together and spending many past winters at their condominium in Clearwater, FL. Bob was a true gentleman; he was a wonderful, kind, gentle and dedicated husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
