Happy 80th Birthday .............Uncle Mac
Message from Bob Kjelgaard
February 28, 2016 6:05 PM

So sorry to have heard of this. I played in Mac's bands in the 1980's- my first gig was New Year's Eve, 1979, as bassist. I later moved to lead guitar. He and Rock helped me grow as a musician- he was an inspiring performer, and had in-depth knowledge and love of the music. He also put up with my personal and musical quirks and foibles to a degree showing magnificent patience and forbearance. I'd always hoped to get back in touch with him to tell him how much I appreciated those years, but failed in attempts to locate him (I'd been told he moved, I see now he had not).

I miss him greatly- my sincerest condolences to his wife and family. He was a great man and a profound influence in my life. May his rest be glorious.

Pep, Jeff, and I are fellow musicians who had the honor and privilege of knowing and playing with "Mac" back in the early 60's. We all loved him and will never forget that
rich, resonate voice of his. He could sure sing the Blues. He was a gentleman, a truly special human being. Our deepest sympathies to you all.

Wandered in to Manley's in JC one Saturday night, and heard this great blues band.
Started following these cats to gigs around the Greater Binghamton area. We're saddened to learn that Mac had retired in 2009, and lost track of he and the boys.
You guys provided us with many good times. I guess you just ran Outta Time, my
friend. Rest in peace my brother.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mac. I first met him at IBM and would discuss and debate yankees vs dodgers. It was always so much fun. In later years I would see Mac around town when he was in the band or just out and about. I very much enjoyed talking with him. It was funny, because we would get so caught up in talking baseball...any buddies I was with would end up walking away-knowing it would be awhile! He was truly a very good man. He will be missed!

Mac McGhee was and still is an inspiration to me. I knew Mac from IBM before I knew him as a musician, singer and performer.
Mac (Cornelius) and I started working for IBM on the exact same day, May 20th 1974. We worked in the same department in 1975-1976. That is the time that we used to eat lunch in his car, and listen to cassette tapes he made from records he had at home. For the first time in my life, I was given the opportunity to hear the real deal Rhythm & Blues artistry of Bobby Blue-Bland.
Mac played the tape of "Dreamer", Bobby Bland's latest album in the year 1974--two years after it had been released--and introduced me to the music that I had never really heard when I was a young white singer in the 1960's. Mac was a good and generous man, from day one. He and I talked at length about racism, R&B, Blues by itself, the radio stations in the south that played music by black artists, and even what Mac thought of Elvis Presley's "impersonation" black R&B music. Mac always believed that Elvis Presley opened the doors to the blues and Black blues music, by bringing that music to white people. I thought that all black people hated Elvis for "stealing" their music and getting rich doing it.
Mac said I was wrong to believe that. Mac said that *some* black people DID hate Elvis for that; but not all black people. Mac loved Elvis Presley, and respected him for what he brought to American music as a whole.
Mac was a wise man, a generous man, and a friend of mine; that I didn't give back to him as much as he shared with me. I am not pleased with myself for that; but Mac would probably say, as he did many times, "You're alright Rick White!" He would also tell me that I should keep the blues as the center of what I did, when I sang. He would say, "Rick White, do it right!".
I am very sorry for his loss and his family's loss, and I regret that I didn't know that he passed on Dr. King's birthday. If there's a heaven, Mac will be shakin' them up on a whole new level of joy! Rest well, my friend.

Richie, I'm sorry for the loss of your father. He was a great guy. He once hit a home run during a game at Columbus Park. I was over watching Larry Lobacz play in a basketball game and his home run ball blind sided me in the head and knocked me to the ground. He had some "pop!" I met him when he and I were in the same hospital room at Binghamton General. Your family is in my prayers.
