My condolences to the Freer family. Mr. Freer taught me earth science and biology at North High School. He was a great teacher and made my love for science grow stronger. He was always available if I needed help after class. I remember our class field trips to Chamberlain Creek.

All the flora and fauna shed a tear at his passing. Mr. Freer as I knew him, sparked my curiosity of nature which to this day instilled in me a greater respect for our world and its environment.

Thank you Mr. Freer.

We first met Bernie in 1970 when I transferred to West Jr. to teach Science. He was a great colleague and friend who "rode the arrow of time" with all of our Science Department teachers. I will always remember him fondly. Our sympathy to you all in Kentucky.

It is with the greatest of sorrows to learn of the passing of Bernie. When I was a new science teacher at Binghamton High School, Bernie generously took me on as a student teacher in the Science Department.
He was instrumental in teaching me not only the best practices in teaching, but also that our students need to be understood holistically. Bernie was instrumental in developing the Experienced Based Education program at BHS.
I am forever indebted to Bernie for all that he has taught me and I can assure you first-hand that he has had a tremendous impact on his students.

He was a great man and friend. I know I will miss him a lot.

With greatest sympathy and respect,
Rick Wheeler

Bernie was one of my teachers who later became a friend when I worked for his church. He had a tremendous zest for life, incredible intelligence and a sense of humor second to none. I am grateful to have known him and thankful for his guidance over the years. I will truly miss Bernie and his irreverent one-liners. My deepest condolences to his family in their time of sorrow.

I am yet another in a long line of West Junior High students who were influenced by this great man. He was a kind, trusting soul, an amazing teacher who led young minds into the wonders of science, and a humble man who instilled curiosity and respect. You will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing you. Thank you, Mr. Freer.

To Bernie's Wife, her Son, and Bernie's Family:
Bernie and I taught together for several years at West Junior High School. I join you in mourning him. He was a caring friend, a wonderful teacher, and a cherished colleague throughout our careers. The students at West often think of Bernie and reminisce about their adventures in his class (on FB). He did a lot for a great many people and will be sadly missed by all of us. My sympathy and prayers are with you at this sorrowful time. "Que Bernie repose en paix." Evelyn

The name Bernie Freer was a well known one in our household as I grew up. Not only did he teach my late sister, Nancy, 9th grade biology at West Jr. High, he was also a Scouting and Masonic brother of my late father, Frank Chupp. I live in buffalo, NY , but come to Binghamton regularly to help my mom, Berta Chupp. I was in Binghamton the day Mr. Freer's name appeared in the obituaries, and while my mom suffers from Alzheimers, she had no problem remembering Mr. Freer and what a good friend he had been to the family. Unfortunately, we will not be able to attend any of the services, but please know, that on behalf of my family, I send our heartfelt sympathy in the loss of someone so special. I first met Bernie when I was a youngster at the Binghamton YMCA attending their Saturday morning programs. Bernie ran the Craft Shop and got me interested in the various projects there. When I got to 7th grade, I became a Jr Leader, and among my duties I got to help in the Craft Shop with Bernie.

I next ran into Bernie when I was a 9th grade student at West Jr High School, and he was my Biology teacher. And what a great job he did! I kept working at the Y all through high school, and Bernie was there some of that time, and some of the time I eventually graduated to running the craft shop myself.

After college, I went back to the Y again...but this time as the Youth Director, and I got to work with Bernie again. I could think of no one better to run the Craft Shop than he. He was great with the kids, and seemed to have a grand time with it.

Next, Bernie worked with us during the summer at the Y Day Camp heading up one of our units. What marvelous fun it was to have him around.

The obituary mentions Bernie's willingness to help others, and his trust in others. And both of those are so true. We could all learn a bit from him in those categories. And we should also learn from his humanity, and his sense of humor.

Thanks for being you, Bernie. You will be missed!

Bernie was a friend. I have known him for 25 years, and when I think of him, I think of a person who loved all creatures in God's world. He was a dedicated teacher, a practicing naturalist, and his kindness and gentleness was felt by all. He was particularly proud of his succes as a teacher, working with students who might have dropped out, and because of him and other dedicated teachers, the studemts stayed in school, and went on to college. His Beverly and her son made Bernies's last few years the hppiest of is life.
To know him was to love him, and we all have beautiful memories of a unique person who made a difference in the lives of so many.
