I attended Theodore Roosevelt School during the 60's. While many of the teachers could be a bit authoritarian, Mrs. Powell was the sweetest woman you could ever hope to meet, and was always helpful. I remember at Christmas time, when the students would tour all the classrooms to view the decorations, Mrs. Powell would have a bowl of candy on hand to distribute to the children as they toured the library. My condolences to her family.

Some good angel made me read the obituary for Mrs. Powell - the name must have been familar even though I didn't realize it - my goodness! - Mrs. Powell influenced my entire life! I attended Theodore Roosevelt, and in fifth grade, I was so impressed with the library and Mrs. Powell that I decided at that moment that my goal in life was to be a librarian! I never waivered, and although I met my husband after only two years of college and did not earn a MLS, I was able to advance through the civil service system and be a library clerk at Your Home Public Library for 17 years, after first being a page at JCHS and Your Home! Every day working in the library was a joy, and I don't think many people love their jobs as much as I did! Thank you Mrs. Powell! I am so happy you lived long and well! I'm sure her loss is heartbreaking. I will always cherish fond memories of this lady that so guided such a happy career and instilled a lifetime of overwhelming enjoyment of reading in addition to helping others to learn and have fun with books!.

To the family of Mrs. Powell --

Please know that she Mrs. Powell had a very large impact on many, many lives while at Theodore Roosevelt. She certainly went out of her way to help students learn to read in any way she could. My joy of reading (and immense collection of autographed books) is a direct result of her immense interest in teaching children to read.

May your memories bring you comfort during these difficult days.

Most sincerely,
Sharon Beavan

Mrs. Powell was a wonderful librarian and full of encouragement for the love of reading. Getting a new book to read was a treat beyond believing at Theodore Roosevelt where my two sisters and I attended grade school in the 60s! The love of learning surely was passed on to me. I taught school for 35 years and now continue to take classes myself in retirement. Thank you, Mrs. Powell! I will imagine you organizing things for a book club in heaven! All my most sincere condolences on your family's loss.

My loving client and devoted lady! what a pleasure to have served and styled her hair at her home, Good Shepard. Wednesday was a great day for Helen and for me as I scrubbed and she truly appreciated my attention.
In the years of service we had great admiration for one another's lives and families happenings. I know she is baking her famous cake, traveling, reading, dressed in her beautiful purple clothing, of coarse.
An amazing friend and a kind proper woman who lived to talk of her devoted and dedicated children.
In her memory I will always pause and smile on Wednesdays at 9:30 am
Blessings,
Pattie Wrighter

Helen Powell was a kind and loving woman who took such an interest in others. My fondest memories of her will always be how welcome she made me feel the first time I met the Powell clan and when she gave me my first cookbook 'The Joy of Cooking,' which I have 35 years later and still use. She always sent the kids cards on less popular holidays with a five dollar bill, making it a surprised and appreciated gift. My children (Meghan, Drew and Emma) and I will miss her greatly. My love and prayers to your family.

I have fond memories of Mrs. Powell! She was a kind and caring person always eager to help as the school librarian at Theodore Roosevelt where I attended grade school through the early to late 60s. I grew up attending T. Roosevelt School back in the 60's (I'm 56 now...) I have many fond memories of Mrs. Powell!! (...not to mention the occasional magic trick her husband would treat us to) Sitting and listening to her read books to us and then turning the book around so we could see the illustrations, I hung onto her every word. She touched the hearts and lives of so many of us as youngsters nearly 50 years ago, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying "Thank you Mrs. Powell for shaping our lives and making us lifelong learners and readers to this day." As a teacher today, I only hope that I can have the same impact on my students' lives as she had on me.

Today (Palm Sunday) we honored the memory of our brother Scottish Rite Masons that have gone before us. Helen's husband Dick was a dedicated Scottish Rite Mason and Helen was always right at his side at our family events. As we remember our brothers, we also remember their family members.

May you be comforted that your mother has once again joined Dick in their perpetual union in Heaven.

Helen often accompanied Dick to our Masonic dinners and family functions. It has been many years since we have had the pleasure of having her present at our functions, but please know that those of us left that knew your parents will always cherish our memories of both of them.

Your Masonic family.
