George Shuman, 96, of Binghamton died March 13, 2017 at the James G. Johnson Nursing Home. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marcia (Fox) Shuman of Binghamton and his sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Susan Shuman of Portland, OR and Andy and Nancy Shuman of Vestal, grandchildren; David Shuman, Andrea Shuman-Arevalo and Katie Shuman, 2 great-grandsons, Gabriel and Phoenix, his sister, Myrtle Mullens of FL and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his brothers Jack and Morris (Moe). George served in the U.S Coast Guard during WWII, serving as a radioman on an oil tanker in the South Pacific.  George began his career working for his father’s company, Binghamton Fluorescent Co, later owning the store until transferring ownership to his sons in 1988. George continued to work up until just prior to his 95th birthday, having worked over 70 years for the company. He was a former member of the Binghamton Lions, Philetus Masonic Lodge #1023 and a member of Temple Israel. One of his great joys was raising dogs for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. One special dog he and his wife raised and later kept was Vica, a faithful companion that he continued to miss dearly after her death. Special thanks are extended to the James G. Johnston Nursing Home staff for the care and kindness extended to both George and his family, which was beyond measure.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday at Temple Israel, 4737 Deerfield Pl., Vestal. The family will receive friends at Temple Israel from 10:00 – 11:00 am. Burial will follow in West Lawn Cemetery, Johnson City. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the building fund at Temple Israel or the Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598. Shiva will be observed at the family home, 5 Riverside Drive, evenings starting Saturday. Please sign his guestbook at www.HEFUNERALHOME.com.
